"For clarity's sake", Hirschfeld classified sexual characteristics into four groups: "1. The genitals, 2. Other physical characteristics, 3. The sexual drive, 4. Other psychical characteristics." Distinct examples of sexual organ transitions were hermaphrodites; of bodily transitions were "bearded ladies"; of sexual drive transitions were homosexuals; and of psychical transitions were transvestites. A large photo-wall hung in the Institute, depicting numerous "specimens" of sexual transitions 1 . (On the following 10 text panels, individual transitions are presented.
